A MORTON BIBLIOGRAPHY

NOTE November 2018: I haven't worked on this page in a long time, and probably won't find time to update it, but there may still be something of interest to you.

1. Anonymous. History of Penobsquis. Kings County Historical and Archival Society.
The "History of Penobsquis" [Kings Co., New Brunswick] was reprinted from copies of the Kings County Historical and Archival Society, Inc. 1986 and 1987 newsletters. We have extracted those notes relating to families associated with John McCully and his brother, Samuel. There are other names that may be of interest through other families (e.g., Hayward or Wallace in-laws, or relatives

-The Free Christian Baptist Church was organized in 1831. In 1840 they erected a church in the Lower Burying Grounds (Pioneer Cemetery) on land that reportedly had been given in 1816 by GEORGE McCULLY. NOTE: There is some confusion on this point. There was no George McCully born in 1816! Elsewhere in this booklet, the claim is made that JOHN McCULLY gave the land to "the proprietors of the Union School House" in 1816, but also that on 18 Mar 1826 ROBERT COLPITTS gave them land he had bought from John McCully on 10 May 1822. The latter seems the most likely, but apparently some land had been donated by JOHN McCULLY in 1816 for Union School, and Colpitts donated adjacent land for the meeting house in 1826. It isn't clear whether the cemetery was on the first or second donation. The church was taken down by ROLAND MORTON in 1875 and moved to Springdale, where it was rebuilt as a mill, store, and later a barn.

-The Kedron School was built on the SAMUEL T. MORTON property, later owned by CHESTER ROBINSON. Samuel T. Morton ran the Kedron post office out of his house before 1898, and for some years used a building on his property as a courthouse and Sunday school. About 1898, the building was moved down to the border between the properties of R. C. McQuinn Jr. and JOSEPH TEAKLES.

-Early merchants in Penobsquis were SAMUEL H. HAYWARD, HARRY MORTON, GEORGE STOCKTON, and C. N. ROBINSON.

MORTON FAMILY-The Mortons were English Loyalists. CAPT. GEORGE AUGUSTUS MORTON came to New Brunswick and took up a grant in 1786 on the banks of the Kennebecasis River. He had 7 sons and 1 daughter - SAMUEL, ELKANAH, GEORGE AUGUSTUS II, NELSON, ROLAND ALEXANDER and ALEXANDER ROLAND (twins), JOHN and SARAH. Most of them lived in Penobsquis and have many descendants locally.

FREEZE Family - The Freezes came to Nova Scotia from England. In 1800, William FREEZE and two sons left Cumberland, N.S. for Kentucky. They crossed the Bay of Fundy to the Petitcodiac River, crossed over the Portage Hills, and saw the Kennebecasis valley, decided to settle there, instead.
Four sons: Samuel FREEZE was a stone mason, had a brick kiln, and built the first brick house in Penobsquis, built chimneys and cellar walls, and carved tombstones. He started what may have been the earliest Masonic Lodge in New Brunswick [Zion #21]. He was a member of the New Brunswick Legislature. His son, Samuel Nelson FREEZE, was High Sheriff of Kings County for 35 years, and his great-grandson was Deputy Sheriff for several years.

"Samuel Freeze (b. ca 1822, d. 23 Aug 1870) married Sarah E. Morton (b. ca 1820) on 18 Jul 1846 in Kings County, NB. He was a farmer and a hotel keeper in Norton Parish of Kings County, NB. He died of consumption. Samuel was a son of John Freeze (1787-11 Nov 1865) and Ann (Nancy) Snider (ca 1787-31 May 1856). They farmed in Penobsquis. John and his parents are buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Penobsquis, NB.
Samuel's grandparents were William Freeze (b. 1745 in Hovingham, Yorkshire, d. 1812 in Penobsquis) and Mary Bulmer (d. ca 1790). William and Mary were married in Hovingham in 1770. I have a copy of their marriage record. They came to Nova Scotia in 1772.
"Samuel Freeze took the census of the district in 1861. He listed himself, his wife Sarah, age 41 and children Henry, age 14, Abigail, age 7, George, age 3.
"In the 23 Dec 1937 issue of the Kings County Record (published in Sussex, NB) is the obituary of George M. Freeze, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Freeze. It also said he was for many years proprietor of the River View Hotel at the Norton end of the Hampton Village bridge. He apparently inherited the hotel from his father. It also said his mother's name was Elizabeth. Do you know if Sarah's middle name was Elizabeth? My record shows Sarah E.
"George had two surviving children, Mrs. A. J. Sollows, Halifax, NS and Miss Ethel Freeze, Montreal, Quebec. His wife was born Annie Jackson. Also listed as a survivor was brother Frank Freeze, living in Boston, MA. Frank was listed in the 1871 census, but Abigail was missing. Henry Freeze married Lydia A Morton on 15 Dec 1880. I have nothing more on this family.
I have published a partial genealogy of the Freezes. My wife was born Evelyn Freeze and she is a greatgreat granddaughter of William Freeze who came to Nova Scotia in 1772. A great great grandmother of mine was also a Freeze, hence my interest in the family.

"On Jan 8, 1926, in the Kings County Record, an article titled "Record of the Morton Family" was published. It was written by my Great Grandfather Butler Hutchison who was born near Sussex, N. B.
I have a photocopy of his original type written notes outlining the descendents of George Augustus Morton and Agnes Hutchinson. They are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Penobsquis, N.B. together with a great number of MORTONS including Samuel and Catherine (Hayward) Morton. My misspelling of Hayward as Haywood, comes from my Great Grandfathers notes, but the dates match.
Samuel Morton was the eldest of seven sons and one daughter born to the above George Morton and Agnes Hutchinson. According to my great grandfather's notes, when Samuel left home to do for himself, he bought a farm five or six miles east of the homestead ( on the Kennebecasis River). His notes go on to give information about the 8 children including who they married and how many children. He kept updating his notes until his death in 1937. He corresponded with any family member he could find."

It is said William died young and Widow took children and went to the states poss around 1870's, Also that Betsy lived with a Charlie Price on the Gorge Rd (unknown what town) after Williams death. Elijah & Ephriam returned to NB.

Paul Keroack of Stratford, CT, doing research on MORTON for a friend, wrote:
"The connection I have is to George Augustus Morton, b. 7th June 1763 and Agnes Hutchinson, b. 15th Feb 1771, listed as parents of Samuel, b. 14th April 1790. My friend has these names, with these birth dates, as part of a list of 19 ancestral names written years ago by a relative on a sheet of lined paper. The listing does not give relationships except for the marriage of George and Agnes noted as 7th July 1789. I suppose it may be copied from pages of a family bible.
"So far, the oldest ancestor I have clearly linked to the Morton line I am tracing is a John Morton and wife Emma E. Stockton, parents of Fletcher Edward (or Edward Fletcher) Morton (10 Jan 1861 - 14 July 1935). His death record in Bridgeport CT lists his birth place as 'Canada'.
"There is also on my list a John Morton b. 30th of July 1839 who I am so far guessing may be the father of Fletcher noted above. This John is presumably a son of one of the nine children of George and Agnes."

[My response: Andrew,the PENNINGTON records on the Hayward pages are one source only, a
several page report by B. H. Morton of Vancouver, B.C. that I obtained from a
friend in Ottawa. In general,the names in the paper have proven prettyaccurate when I tried to check them out. Unfortunately, the paper doesn't have any dates or places, just the names, so it is of limited use.
I checked some of the other New Brunswick references I have on hand, but only found one other PENNINGTON mention: from John Elliott's cemetery books for Kings County - At the site of the old Cardwell Baptist Church in Penobsquis: Mary, beloved wife of John PENNINGTON, died 4 Sep 1864, age 64. [NOTE from Andrew Macaulay: John and Mary Pennington were parents of Martha and Marian Morton.]]

George W. McCully made a genealogical trip to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in Aug 1996. Pertinent comments from a letter to us follow.
"An interesting document I came across at Land Registry [Fredericton, N.B.]. On April 10, 1895, W. Mortimer McCULLY, J. Albert McCULLY and Elizabeth his wife (two of my grandfather's brothers), relinquished to Isabel MORTON, dau. of Horatio Nelson MORTON Senior, 'all our individual interest in all the real estate of the late Horatio N. Morton Senior, who died intestate, and in all those certain pieces or parcels of land situate lying and being in the Parish of Cardwell...', for the sum of five dollars. I can see what happened: the father of W. Mortimer and J. Albert, my great grandfather Horatio Nelson McCULLY, married Mary MORTON, another daughter of Horatio Nelson MORTON, therefore, as grandchildren of the deceased, the brothers could have some claim on his estate... All three acknowledged residency 'at Salem in the State of Massachusetts' at that time."
"John Albert [McCULLY] and his family returned to Salem some time between the 1881 and 1891 census, and they and William Mortimer [McCULLY] were residing there at the time of William Mortimer's death in 1926. (His body was returned to Penobsquis for burial in the family plot in the Pioneer Cemetery.) In 1926, Mrs. Charles GAILEY nee McCULLY, a sister, was also residing at Salem."
"John Albert McCULLY's family was listed in the 1881 census for Kings County, as follows:

"My grandfather George Howard's [McCULLY] older brother, Albert [McCULLY] (b. ca 1847) left N.B. prior to the 1871 census, but returned to take over his father's [Horatio Nelson McCULLY] farm in 1874. He returned to N.B. with a wife, Mary ____ (b. ca 1848 in the U. S.) and a son, Frank F. McCULLY (b. ca 1871, also in the U. S.). Albert sold the farm to his brother, William Mortimer McCULLY, in 1877 and again left N.B. William Mortimer sold the farm and left shortly thereafter, also.
"So, to the Salem [MA] connection. A quit-claim deed relative to some property belonging to the father of Horatio's wife (a MORTON) indicates that W. Mortimer McCULLY, J. Albert McCULLY and his wife Elizabeth McCULLY were residents of Salem, Mass., at that time. A younger brother of Albert et al., Samuel F. McCULLY and his wife Roxie McCULLY were residents of Fitchburg [Worcester Co.], Mass., at the same time.
"A 1926 obituary in the Kings County 'Record', Sussex, notes that the remains of William Mortimer McCULLY were returned to be buried in the family plot at Penobsquis (Sussex Vale), 'leaving to mourn his brothers, Howard [George Howard McCULLY, my grandfather), Petitcodiac, N. B., and Albert McCULLY, of Salem, Mass., as well as two sisters, Julia E. [McCULLY], wife of Charles GAILEY (son of Horatio McCully's neighbor at Head of Millstream, NB) of Salem, Mass., and Mary Jane [McCULLY], wife of Sanford STEEVES (originally from Hopewell area) of Fargo, ND."

1. Debts to be paid first.
2. To wife Abigail £40 yearly; sons Henry and William to each pay £20/year as long as she lives, as long as she doesn't remarry and ask for dowry. Also to Abigail, the use of her and George's house, yard, furniture, etc., as long as she lives.
3. To son David the two lots currently in his possession: lot 14 (260 acres) and lot B (140 acres), plus all buildings and improvements.
4. To grandson Handford Hayward, son of late Humphrey Hayward, the lot Humphrey had that George had purchased from James McAffie; Handford to pay £15 for it, to go to William Morton (Norton?), son of Samuel Morton.
5. To son Henry lot #58 bounded on the west by land George bought from Philip Force, on the north by Trout Creek, and on the east by Mrs. Bowser's land - 200 acres.
Also to Henry, 200 acres of lot 57 which George purchased from Philip Force, except for that part reserved for Abigail's use until she dies; then it goes to Henry.
6. To son William the hill land purchased from John Hennigar and Samuel - William must pay off the £158 mortgage. Also William gets 90 acres of lot 57 currently in his possession.
7. Sons Henry and William to divide equally the land on Salmon River purchased from Jacob Snider.
8. To daughters Mary (wife of Thomas McLellan), Jane (wife of William Pugsley), and Isabella (wife of Dr. David McLellan), £100 each, payable £10 per year.
9. To daughter Catherine (wife of Isaac Cleveland), £60, payable £10 per year.
10. To granddaughter Sarah Frances (wife of Gilbert Davidson) 1 cow, 10 sheep, and (after Abigail's death) household furnishings.
11. To St. John District Church of Eastern British America, in trust to support a Wesleyan mission in Africa - £50, payable £5 yearly. Also £50 for a fund to support worn-out ministers, payable £5 yearly.
12. Son Henry gets any remainder of the estate.
Henry and William Hayward were made executors; witnesses to the will were Robert McCully, Hugh Teakles, and Clark Teakles. A property inventory done 5 Dec 1856 showed the estate valued at £4311+, £4150 of it in real estate.
