WAGON TRAINS AND OVERLAND TRAILS
BUTRILLE, S. G. 1993. Women's
Voices for the Oregon Trail. Boise, ID: Tamarack Books. Paper.
251 pages. ISBN 0-9634839-0-0. $7.00 plus $3.50 mailing.
In our opinion, nowhere near as good a "women's perspective"
as some others of the genre, but good light reading. The latter
part of the book is "a guide to women's history along the
"Trail," in which the author compares historic sites
and famous places along the trail with journal entries. Our copy
of the book is very good.
FANSELOW, J. 1992. The Traveler's
Guide to the Oregon Trail. Helena, Mt: Falcon Press. Paper. 196
pages. ISBN 1-56044-192-5. $5.00 plus $3.50 mailing.
A what to see, where to stay, where to eat directory to the Oregon
Trail. Some interesting information; not as useful as some guidebooks.
Our copy is good; only minor blemishes to the covers.
HAINES, A. L. 1994. HISTORIC SITES
ALONG THE OREGON TRAIL. (4th edition). Tucson, AZ: The Patrice
Press. Paper. 455 pages. ISBN 1-880397-03-X. $12.00 plus $4.50
mailing.
Very useful guide to landmarks along the Oregon Trail, with many
explanatory quotes from trail journals and other sources. Our
copy is very good, with slight dog-earing and wear on the front
cover.
MATTES, M. J. 1969. The Great
Platte River Road: the covered wagon mainline via Fort Kearny
to Fort Laramie. Lincoln, Nebraska: Nebraska State Historical
Society. Hardbound, dust jacket, 583 pages. $5.00 plus $3.50 mailing.
There are lots of books on the overland trails, but no one has
come close to Merrill Mattes' synthesis of letters, journals,
diaries, etc., documenting the experience of travel across Nebraska
in the mid-1800s. Lots of maps, quotes, and references. Our copy
is ex-library with the usual defacing of front and back inside
covers. The dust jacket is worn, but intact. The text itself is
clean, and the binding good.
WILBUR, S. R., and S. H. WILBUR.
2000. The McCully Train: Iowa to Oregon 1852. Gresham, OR: Symbios.
Paper. 200 pages. ISBN 0-9651263-2-3. $7.00 plus $4.00 mailing.
This is our own SYMBIOS publication, still in print. We usually
have a few copies that are new, but are slightly shopworn (scuffs,
or dog ears, for example) so cannot be sold for full price.
CALIFORNIA AND SOUTHWEST HISTORY
HANSEN, H. J. and J. T. MILLER.
1962. Wild oats in Eden: Sonoma County in the 19th Century. Santa
Rosa, CA: privately published. Hard bound, no dust jacket (may
not have had one), 147 pages. $20.00 plus $4.00 mailing.
Well done, well illustrated history of early Sonoma County, California.
Other than two blemishes on the inside covers (where someone tried
to cover up previous owner's names or other sale data), our copy
is very clean and well bound.
HINE, R. V. 1962. Edward Kern
and American expansion. New Haven and London: Yale University
Press. Hardbound, dust jacket, 180 pages. $8.00 plus $4.00 mailing.
Well documented, good reading account of topographer-artist-scientist
Edward Kern's travels in the American Southwest in association
with the Fremont Expeditions and on his own. Our copy, including
the dust jacket, is very clean and well bound.
LINGENFELTER, R. E. and K. R.
GASH. 1984. The newspapers of Nevada, a history and bibliography
1854-1979. Reno, NV: University off Nevada Press. ISBN 0-87417-075-3.
Hardbound, dust jacket, 337 pages. $8.00 plus $3.50 mailing.

trader in the California Redwoods. Oakland, CA: East Bay Regional
Parks District. Paper, stapled, about 95 unnumbered pages. $15.00
plus $3.00 mailing.
This is a history of the area now covered by Redwood Regional
Park in the hills behind Oakland, California, constructed mainly
from the unpublished journal of early California artist Joseph
P. "James" Lamson. It is amateurishly done, but fascinating
in that the Lamson journals are not readily available for reading.
Logging of what were once extensive forests of Coast Redwoods,
stories of California condors, and incidents of life in a rough-and-tumble
logging community shortly after the Gold Rush are among the topics
covered. Our copy has no extraneous markings, and is as solid
as a 30 year old, staple-bound publication can be.
POESCH, J. 1961. Titian Ramsay
Peale and his journals of the Wilkes Expedition 1799-1885. Philadelphia,
PA: American Philosophical Society. Hardbound, dust jacket, 214
pages. $20.00 plus $5.00 mailing.
This is a general biography of Titian Peale, as well as presentation
of existing parts of his journals covering his travels in the
South Pacific, Oregon, California, and South America. Our copy
is clean and tightly bound. The dust jacket is frayed, and in
one place has been mended with Scotch tape.
ROBINSON, W. W. 1979. Land in
California. The story of mission lands, ranchos, squatters, mining
claims, railroad grands, land scrip, homesteads. Berkeley, CA:
University of California Press. ISBN 978-0-520-03875-2. Paper,
291 pages. $8.00 plus $3.00 mailing.
This is the first paperback printing of the 1948 original. As
the subtitle claims, this is a comprehensive look at how California
came to be what it is. The explanations of the early land granting
procedures and controversies are very good. Our copy is in nearly
new condition.

$3.00 mailing.

as in Alaska and elsewhere. Informative, but not especially interesting,
reading. Our copy is clean and well bound, with just a little
wearing and denting on the edges of the cover.
SIMPSON, L. B. 1938. California
in 1792, the expedition of Jose Longinos Martinez. San Marino,
CA: Huntington Library. Hardbound, dust jacket, 111 pages. $20.00
plus $3.00 mailing.
Jose Longinos Martinez visited both "Old" California
(Baja California, Mexico) and "New" California (U. S.
A.) in 1792. His travel route and place names are often difficult
to correlate with landmarks known today, but his descriptions
of native tribes encountered, vegetation, etc., are fascinating.
Other than having a previous owner's name written on the first
page, our copy very clean and solidly bound.
SPENCER-HANCOCK, D. 1980. Fort
Ross: Indians, Russians, Americans. Jenner, CA: Fort Ross Interpretive
Association. Paper, 43 pages. $5.00 plus $2.00 mailing.
Succinct but informative review of the history of the Fort Ross
area of northern California, with lots of historical photographs.
Our copy is unmarked and in generally good shape.

Rush letters of J. D. B. Stillman. Palo Alto, CA: Lewis Osborne.
Hardbound, dust jacket, 75 pages. $7.50 plus $3.50 mailing.
Very entertaining journal of 1849-1850 in California's Sacramento
Valley and Delta areas. Our copy is very clean and solidly bound;
the dust jacket (plain paper, no design) is frayed on the edges.

This is the fifth expansion and revision of the classic Oregon

historical chronology of the State. Our copy has a little bit
of yellow highlighting, but is otherwise clean and sound.
