DAVID PIKE, GRANTEE OF FALMOUTH,
NOVA SCOTIA:

A PRELIMINARY REVIEW OF HIS DESCENDANTS

Compiled
by Sanford "Sandy" Wilbur

USED BOOK SALES - OVERLAND TRAILS, AMERICAN INDIANS, GENEALOGY, ETC.

David PIKE [sometimes PYKE] was a grantee at Falmouth, Hants County, Nova Scotia, receiving his land there in July 1761. Many of the Falmouth grantees were from Rhode Island, but so far I've have been unable to find David PIKE in Rhode Island or (for certain) elsewhere in New England (but see below). From the apparent ages of his children, he must have been born no later than 1730. He may have been married twice, but there are only two records of his wife's name: Sarah named as the mother of his [apparently] youngest child, born 1765, and Abigail co-signing a land deed in Albert Co., New Brunswick [1797?]. As one of David's oldest children was named Abigail, and none are known to have been named Sarah, it may be that Sarah and Abigail were the same person. David and Abigail were both alive in Albert County in 1798. No records of their deaths or burial places have been found.

Only three children can be definitely attributed to this family: David Jr., Justice [sometimes, Justus], and Jonathan (although I have wondered if Jonathan might actually be the child of David Pike Jr.), but four others are almost certainly members of his family - Abigail, Rosanna, Mary, and Molly. There is no indication of any other PIKE family in Hants County or Kings County until after 1800, when PYKEs from a long-established Halifax family moved to the area. The tentative family is described below.

There are several sites on the World Wide Web that have identified this David PIKE as the son of Onesiphoros PIKE of Weston, Massachusetts. This is almost certainly an error, and may stem from some of my early speculations. [I mentioned this family to several people as a "possibility" because I was unable to find any other New England David Pikes of anywhere near the correct age.] Just recently, I found some intriguing information on a David Pike in Connecticut, about the right age for David, the Falmouth grantee. Another David born in the same town is the right age to be David Jr. A brother of David "Sr." allegedly had daughters named Rosanna and Abigail, seemingly too large a coincidence to be anything other than family names. I still have been unable to find any original records of this family group, so remember that it is strictly tentative at this time. If you know anything about the Connecticut PIKES, I'd be very pleased to hear from you. Please also send along any additions, corrections, comments, or questions.

I have only included six generations on this page, but I have some other, more contemporary information on some of the families. If you see something that interests you, let me know.

The references, you will find, are very repetitive. I always put all the reference with every person; cumbersome in a form like this, but you don't have to go searching for the information. All the generations are separated, and all the individuals are numbered, so just make liberal use of your scroll bar. THERE IS AN INDEX AT THE FOOT OF THE PAGE.

FIRST GENERATION [VERY TENTATIVE]

1 James PIKE
---------------------------------------------
Spouse: Rebecca WOODRUFF [4 Feb 1690/1 - ]
Father: Samuel Woodruff (1661-1742)
Mother: Rebecca Clark (?-1737)

Children (PIKE):

2 - Samuel (1724- )
3 - David (1730-)

In IGI, I found the following records [haven't yet tracked down sources] that look like they are very likely our Nova Scotia PIKE family connection.

--Samuel WOODRUFF and Rebecca CLARK had dau. Rebecca WOODRUFF 4 Feb 1690/1
--Rebecca WOODRUFF married James PIKE of Farmington, CT [haven't found date yet]
--James and Rebecca had Samuel PIKE (1724) and David PIKE (1730), both at Farmington, Hartford Co., CT.
--David PIKE had David PIKE 8 May 1754 in Farmington, CT [no record of David Sr's marriage yet, or of other children]
--Samuel PIKE had daughters Rosanna and Abigail in CT. [NOTE: one of my correspondents suggested that Samuel might have died, and David took his daus. to Nova Scotia with him. I think it may be just as likely, or more likely, that those are family names that David used, also.]

2. C. A. Torrey. New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Boston, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society.
In the CD-ROM version of "Torrey," there is the following marriage record that may tie in with our PIKE family:
Samuel WOODRUFF [1661-1742] of Farmington, CT, and Rebecca CLARK [?1667-1737] of Southington, CT, married ca 1685/6.

If my hypothesis proves out, their daughter Rebecca WOODRUFF [b. 4 Feb 1690/1] married James PIKE, father of our David PIKE [b. 1730 Farmington, Hartford Co., CT].

Witnessed: Duncan REED, Elijah SPRAGUE [deed registered 15 Jun 1795].

-On 1 Sep 1797, for 150 pounds, David PIKE of Hopewell, sold to Justus PIKE/PYKE [spelled both ways in deed] of Hopewell, a portion of Lot No. 7, Hopewell - bounded on east by James REED, on north by Justus PIKE, and stretching to the Bay. Witnessed: William BUDD, James REED, Duncan REED justice of the peace.

-From Deed Book C, p.75, #1176: David PIKE/PYKE Jr. of Hillsborough made the following agreement with Justice/Justus PIKE/PYKE of Hopewell. Justus paid David Jr. 50 pounds, for which David Jr. agreed to take their father and mother from Hopewell to Hillsborough and take care of them for life. David Jr. also signed over to Justice all rights to his property in Hillsborough, the land to be used as security for the parents if David Jr. should ever be unable to take care of them. [NOTE: This seems to be an accurate rendering of the content of this deed, but it leaves some questions: why would David Jr. sign his land over to Justice, rather than making stipulation in his will that it would be used to take care of their parents if David Jr. wasn't available. If David Jr. was ill, or planning to leave the area, why would he take on the responsibility for their parents?]

3. Wilbur, S.R. 1997. [My answer to inquiry on Susannah Pike of Nova Scotia]. e-mail. 22 Jan 1997.

The parents of "Susanna" (Rosanna, in the Horton township book) were almost certainly David PIKE and his first wife Sarah _____ (2nd wife was Abigail _____). David Pike was one of the original grantees at Falmouth, Hants Co., Nova Scotia. Most of the Falmouth grantees were "planters" from Rhode Island, but so far I haven't been able to find records of him there. He may have been from Massachusetts or Connecticut - there were many Pikes in both places, but few Davids - or perhaps he had only just
arrived from Great Britain and hadn't time to establish a record in RI before coming to Nova Scotia.

David Pike's definitely known children were Jonathan (b. 25 Nov 1765 in Falmouth, mother apparently Abigail), David Jr., and Justice (or Justus). Other probable children were: Rosanna (m. Jonathan Coldwell/Caldwell 2 Nov 1769); Abigail (m. Eliphalet Coldwell 8 Mar 1774); Mary (m.David Copp Sep 1777); and Molly (m. Stephen Benjamin 17 Nov 1781).

The best information on David Pike's family seems to be in the Horton township book, and in Duncanson's "Falmouth - a New England township in Nova Scotia", p. 363.

The Maritime Provinces area of Canada was ceded by France to Great Britain with the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, but the British hold was tenuous and war threatened again around mid-Century. The Acadians repeatedly refused to swear oaths of allegiance to the British Crown, and Governor Charles Lawrence -without consultation with the Home Government - ordered all Acadians removed from Nova Scotia, to remove the threat of their taking sides in any conflict with the French. In Sept 1775, 3000 Acadians were taken aboard ship and removed to various locations in the southern colonies. The houses are Grand-Pre were burned so that those who escaped roundup would be unlikely to come back.

Governor Lawrence didn't want the Acadian improvements to the land to disappear, so made plans to get the land resettled with Englishmen. The Home Government wanted to give the land to disbanded English soldiers, but Lawrence strongly demurred. He said that soldiers were not the right kind of people to start a country with, that every soldier who had ever come to Halifax had either returned to England or become a dramseller! The Lords of Trade agreed, and Lawrence drew up a proposal to offer the land to New England colonists. The original proclamation was made 12 Oct 1758, followed by details of the settlement 11 Jan 1759.

In April 1759, agents from Rhode Island and Connecticut visited Nova Scotia and were favorably impressed. The first settlers arrived in the spring of 1760.

Names of persons at Falmouth 15 Nov 1760 include: Jabez HARRINGTON, Alex. McCULLOUGH, Adam McCULLOUGH, and David PAKE [PIKE]. Grantees at Newport 1761 included Zerobable WASTCOAT [WESTCOTT], Robert WASTCOAT [WESTCOTT], Robert WASTCOAT Sr. {WESTCOTT], Stukely WASTCOAT [WESTCOTT], and Joseph STRAIGHT.
Among those subscribing at Tantrimar [Sackville, New Brunswick] was Jonathan PIKE

JONATHAN PIKE, son of DAVID & SARAH PIKE b. 8 Mar 1765 [elsewhere says 25 Nov 1765]. [NOTE: It seems likely that this actually is a son of David Pike Jr. If Sarah was the mother of the other Pike children, she would be fairly old. Seems unlikely she was a 2nd wife, because David was later married to "Abigail".

11. C. A. Torrey. New England Marriages Prior to 1700. Boston, MA: New England Historic Genealogical Society.
In the CD-ROM version of "Torrey," there is the following marriage record that may tie in with our PIKE family:
Samuel WOODRUFF [161-1742] of Farmington, CT, and Rebecca CLARK [?1667-1737] of Southington, CT, married ca 1685/6.

If my hypothesis proves out, their daughter Rebecca CLARK [b. 4 Feb 1690/1] married James PIKE, father of our David PIKE [b. 1730 Farmington, Hartford Co., CT].

12. International Genealogical Index. [Pike information].
In IGI, I found the following records [haven't yet tracked down sources] that look like they are very likely our Nova Scotia PIKE family connection.

--Samuel WOODRUFF and Rebecca CLARK had dau. Rebecca WOODRUFF 4 Feb 1690/1

--James and Rebecca had Samuel PIKE (1724) and David PIKE (1730), both at Farmington, Hartford Co., CT.

--Samuel PIKE had daughters Rosanna and Abigail in CT. [NOTE: one of my correspondents suggested that Samuel might have died, and David took his daus. to Nova Scotia with him. I think it may be just as likely, or more likely, that those are family names that David used, also.]

13. MacLean. Descendants of James Pike. Internet document.
This document, prepared by "MacLean," was provided to me by another correspondent, who found it on the World Wide Web. I haven't been able to locate the source, myself. The document is probably incorrect in the generations before David PIKE, the Nova Scotia "Planter." "MacLean" may have taken some of my Internet speculations about the origins of this Pike line, and made them into "facts." The compiler also does not use the "likely" label that I had put on the family of David Pike, and made all the records look like they were proven.
The records for the descendants of Justus PIKE are almost identical to those from G. M. Sanderson [ see separate record], and it seems pretty clear that their information is from the same source. There are a few minor differences in vital record dates. The only information provided by "MacLean" and not Sanderson is:
Ruth P. CROCKER, wife of Robert PIKE [b.1797] was born Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, 7 Dec 1797, died in Eastport, Maine 27 Aug 1888. They had a son Robert PIKE, who married Elizabeth A. _____ [who was b. 1823 and d. Eastport, ME, 4 Jan 1864]. Robert J. and Elizabeth had a dau. Lizzie D. PIKE b. ca 1859, d. 4 Apr 1864.
Nancy CLARK, wife of John D. PIKE [b. 1799], was born 9 Apr 1800. They had a daughter, Abigail PIKE, b. 1821 and died 19 Oct 1822.

9. Reed, D. (1995). [Family sheet for descendants of David COPP Jr.]. Toronto, Canada.
David Reed of Toronto, Canada, offered the following descendancy chart for David COPP Jr.
1- David COPP Jr. b. ca. 1782? d. Jan 1821 Hopewell
sp. Elizabeth REED (father Duncan REED, mother Jerusha
POST) b. 25 Mar 1779 Horton, N.S.; d. 30 Nov 1841?
(she married 2nd William PECK)
2 - Eliza COPP b. ca 1810?
sp. James REED m. 18 Jun 1829 Westmorland,N.B
2 - Mary COPP b. ca. 1817
sp. Elisha OLIVER, m. 23 Dec 1843

sp. Ann BRAY 5 Jun 1851
2 - Lucy COPP b. ca 1821, d. 27 Sep 1889
sp. Allen BRAY m. ca. 1847

[NOTE: There is at least one error in the above: the Mary COPP who married Elisha OLIVER appears to be the granddau. of Jonathan COPP, David Sr's brother. David COPP Jr. dau. Mary E. COPP appears to have married her cousin, Chandler COPP, and moved to Eastport, Maine.] Also, I have found no support for Eliza {COPP} REED or Jerusha COPP being David Jr.'s daughters.

One with pictures and news clippings is in this data base under "Murdoch", where the information from this one is summarized, also.
There are few differences in facts between this version and Murdoch. One is the spelling of Mary COPP McCULLY's sister's name: WALLIS here, WALLA in Murdoch. This also notes that Mary's sister Mrs. READING died in IA.

8. Murdock, T. [Collection of facts, photos and newsclippings about the McCully families].
The "author" of this collection is probably Thae Reitzel Murdock, as the collection runs heavily to the Samuel McCully line. The basic narrative has been reproduced a number of times, so it may be that Thae Murdock was not the original author, but a later compiler of Samuel McCully/Hendershott family information to go with it.

Their son was burned to death at the age of 6, while family was clearing brush; Mary later left McPherson. Twelve years before she died, she dislocated her hip and never walked again. Deed Book Q, p. 55l - 17 Feb 1844 - From Mary McPHERSON (Belmont County) to David and Asa A. McCULLY (Guernsey County) - for $800 - 156 acres in Guernsey Co, being the same as the land described above - witnesses: Thomas W. CLARK and Samuel GILLESPIE.
Deed Book Q, p. 587 -2 Apr 1844 - From John and Mary McPHERSON (Belmont Co.) to David and Asa A. McCULLY - for $500 - NE-1/4 Sec. 4 T10 R7 - 160 acres - witnesses: Henry CRUSER and William BOYD.
NOTE: There is some confusion in all this. It looks like the same 160 acres more or less (NE-1/4 Sec.4 T10 R7) are involved in all these transactions - Mary McCULLY McPHERSON originally bought it, she and new husband John sold it to David and Asa, and David and Asa sold it when they were leaving for Iowa. However, counting John McPHERSON's quit claim, it looks like the property was sold to David and Asa 3 different times! Maybe when Mary decided to go to Iowa with her sons, they "adjusted" the price and negated McPHERSON's quitclaim. David and Asa did end up selling the property for more than the combined three purchases!

3. MacLean. Descendants of James Pike. Internet document.
This document, prepared by "MacLean," was provided to me by another correspondent, who found it on the World Wide Web. I haven't been able to locate the source, myself. The document is probably incorrect in the generations before David PIKE, the Nova Scotia "Planter." It looks like "MacLean" took some of my Internet speculations [without attribution?] about the origins of this Pike line, and made them into "facts." The compiler also took off the "likely" label that I had put on the family of David Pike, and made all my records look like they were proven.
The records for the descendants of Justus PIKE are almost identical to those from G. M. Sanderson [ see separate record], and it is pretty clear that one copied from the other.
