The Descendants of Henry HAYWARD [ca 1744-1808]

Henry HAYWARD served in the British Military, and was awarded a land grant at Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, following the American Revolution. He was married at least three times, possibly four. A few of his lines of descent are fairly well known; many are not. The following is an effort to provide a starting point (or perhaps a continuation point) for others researching these lines.

One note about the references provided below: the information is presented as it occurred in the source document (either original wording or my abstract). Some is obviously incorrect. In some instances, I have made comments within the reference (e.g., "this birthdate is known to be wrong"), but not always - and sometimes I don't know which of several conflicting pieces of information is correct. Please bear that in mind as you use the records. This is definitely a "working document."

I am particularly interested in the descendants of Henry HAYWARD through his second (or third) wife, Jane McCULLOH. Further information on this line is covered on two other pages, one on Henry and Jane and one on the identity of Jane.

Subject: HENRY HAYWARD
I have searched through our files at the West Hants Historical Society in
Windsor and have found very little info on Henry.
There is a hand written notation in the HAYWARD file that says that a Henry
HAYWARD was listed in the 1791 poll tax list for Windsor as a weaver.
Another notation lists the marriage of Henry HAYWARD to Jane McCULLOCH on 13
Dec. 1790. It doesn't say where the marriage took place.
In our files there is also a copy of an old map showing a 500 acre grant to Henry HAYWARD. The lot was out near Ardoise, Hants County. I will put a copy in the HAYWARD file so that you can see it on your next visit.

Friday August 15 - All day at the Provincial Archives at Halifax. We finally saw the original marriage record for Henry HAYWARD and [possibly] John McCULLY's mother. The writing is actually quite clear - Jane McCULLOH. This is a good phonetic version of how Samuel probably said his last name. There were McCULLOCH, McCOLLA, and McCOLLUM names in Hants County at the right time, so we can't say anything definite about Jane, but she is still strong, circumstantially.

(6). Hayward, G. G. and A. Hayward (1810). [Deed for first sale of Henry Hayward's land]. Moncton, New Brunswick, Westmorland County Land Registry Office.
20 Sep 1810 - George G. HAYWARD and wife Abigail (COPP) HAYWARD for £500 sold to James CLARK mariner of Onslow, Nova Scotia, 500 acres in Hopewell, New Brunswick. This was land originally purchased by Henry Hayward from the heirs of Asa Wickwire.
A condition of the sale: "Except the spot of ground on the knowl where the body of Henry Hayward deceased is buried is not to be plowed or broke up but the heirs has the privileges to erect a yard round the grave and keep it in repairs."

(7). Hayward, G. H. (1996). [E-mail regarding Henry Hayward and his Loyalist status].
"I am not a descendant of Henry, but several years ago when I was trying to
sort out my Hayward ancestors from some other New Brunswick Haywards I
corresponded with Rev. Dr. Spurgeon Crossman in Amherst, N.S. (now deceased
I believe), who was descended from Henry, and later with Eunice Franks in
Regina, Saskatchewan, who is also descended from Henry, but I did very
little research in primary sources.
" Rev. Dr. Crossman's notes said Henry Hayward had been an officer in a
British Regiment during the Revolutionary War, and removed in 1783 to Nova
Scotia with the Loyalists and settled at Windsor Road in Hants County. That
sounds as though he might have been a British Regular rather than a
Loyalist, but many in Canada refer to British regulars who settled here
following the War as Loyalists.
"My notes on Henry's son, George Griffith Hayward, say that he was born about
1773 in Ireland while his father was serving there in the British army, but
unfortunately I did not record the source of that information. This too
suggests that Henry may have been a British regular.
"Eunice (Hayward) Franks notes say that Henry Hayward appeared first in
Windsor Township, N.S., 31 Mar 1784 when he bought land from James Boutineau
Franklin, on the Windsor to Halifax Road, where he later obtained a grant of
500 acres "as a Loyalist." Her notes go on to say that contrary to numerous
older published accounts, it was not part of the City of Halifax, nor did he
abandon it as worthless but sold all of his land as recorded in deeds dated
2 Feb 1788, 1 Nov 1797, 17 Mar 1798 and 1 Apr 1798 in the Hants County Land
Registry Office in Windsor, N.S.
"Eunice's notes go on to say that Henry Hayward removed to Hopewell, Shepody
Bay, Albert Co., N.B. in 1800, confirmed by a deed dated 6 Oct 1800 and
recorded as No. 2025 in the Westmorland County Land Registry Office in
Moncton, N.B., for land purchased from the heirs of Asa Wickwire which land
was originally granted to William Daniels Sr. who was from New London, Conn.
"So my answer to your question, for what its worth, is that Henry Hayward was
probably sent to North America as a member of a British Regiment during the
Revolutionary War, was disbanded here at the close of the war, but would
probably not fit the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada
definition of a Loyalist.
"On the point of not being able to locate a petition for land submitted by
Henry Hayward, I am not familiar with Nova Scotia but in New Brunswick there
are no petitions by any of the military settlers of 1783/85 for their
original grant. The grants were in blocks to regiments. For example, Block 3
at Lower Queensbury to the Guides and Pioneers, Block 4 at Prince Willian to
the King's American Dragoons, etc. But there are petitions submitted by
military settlers who were dissatisfied with their allocation or who were
asking for additional land. So Henry Hayward may not have had to petition if
he received land for service to the King."

"Some years ago I wrote to you re Hayward History and that the late Henry Hayward 1742-1808 whose tombstone and grave is at Mountville in Albert County is also my third great grandfather and I believe as you will see a United Empire Loyalist.
"He fought in the American Revolution of 1775-1781. He came and lived near Windsor, a Wesleyan. He moved from Nova Scotia to Albert County in New Brunswick where his son George Griffith later took over his farm at Hopewell, but later moved to Kings County.
"In "Buoy East" of April-May 1925 and page 63 it reads "The next division westerly was purchased by Henry Hayward from Nova Scotia."
"From the Public Archives of Nova Scotia I have, "I am sorry that we do not have a genealogy of the Hayward family. There is a land grant to Henry Hayward in 1784 at Windsor Road in Hants County, but unfortunately, there is no petition attached. We are sending you a reference to this from "Loyalist and Land Settlement in Nova Scotia."
"Also on slip sent from Public Archives concerning Hants County in list of grants we have Henry Hayward, Date 1785 Windsor Road with 500 acres, but as said not claimed. I have heard that this was a rocky section, therefore he moved to Albert County
"After the death of Henry Hayward, the rest moved to Kings County. His son James 1785-1858 became my second great grandfather. His son Jesse 1808-1891 became my great grandfather. His son William James 1836-1895 became my grandfather. His daughter Lillis Ann 1873-1949 became my mother and I, Rev.Dr. Spurgeon C. Crossman was born in 1907.
"I trust this information will straighten out some of the things which are lacking. My mother always said they were of United Empire Loyalist descent and back in those years there was money, belonging to the Haywards in England. Where might one find information concerning relatives in England? To whom would one write? Perhaps there I might find more information concerning this one, Henry Hayward."

No HAYWARDS listed as British officers serving in America prior to Revolutionary War, but the following that might have a relationship:

(10). Franks, E. (1991). "Three Albert County cemeteries." Generations(49): 61-64.
Grave on Shepody Bay, near Hopewell Hill, Albert Co, New Brunswick, in a corner of a pasture above Highway #114 and the railway, on land now owned by Lloyd and Francis Tucker. This was Henry HAYWARD's land when he was buried there. Inscription: In Memory of Henry Hayward who departed this life March 25, 1808 in the 63 year of his age.
Henry Hayward came to Hopewell from the Windsor area, East Hants Co., Nova Scotia, about 1800. He is listed in the 1803 census of Hopewell as having no wife, three children over 10, and 1 child under 10.

Am tracking the family of Henry Hayward, b.@1745, possibly in west Norfolk, Eng. - he was a soldier in the 54th Norfolk Regiment, British Army...discharged at Staten Island, NY Nov. 1783; went first to Windsor, Hants Co., Nova Scotia then to Hopewell, Albert Co., New Brunswick. Have located his military record from1770 when he was stationed at Co. Longford and later Dublin, IR. May have married there - eldest son George bapt. March 1774 at St. Paul's Dublin - I have baptismal record. Have much info to share on this family, including descendants in Canada as well as US....

" My husband is a direct descendant of Henry Hayward [and his first(?) wife] through his son, John, who came to ME and, eventually, to MN where he died. Our two biggest "finds" on this family were: (1) I obtained a copy of the Certificate of Registry of Baptism for son George Hayward from St.Paul's, Dublin where he was baptized on 20 March 1774 and (2) my husband and I went to the Public Record Office, London, tracked various regiments and finally located Henry as a member of the 54th Regiment of Foot, British Army - my notes include all the details!"

"Jane [2nd wife of Henry HAYWARD] may have been daughter of/sister to Loyalist John McColla/MacColla granted 750 acres (where?); bought 500 acres in Hants Co., NS in 1792; Justice of the Peace, Hants Co. 1794; lived Rawdon @1792 and Windsor @1800; Sheriff of Hants Co, 1802-10; married Eunice @1772; she died 27 Jan. 1812 & is buried at Old Parish Burying Ground, Windsor, NS. He born Ireland, died Windsor 10 Oct. 1837. (From "Rawdon & Douglas - Two Loyalist Townships in Nova Scotia," John Victor Duncanson, Mike Publishers, Belleville, Ont., 1898, pages 295-96).............." "I do have information regarding the three children of Jane with Henry

Henry, Jr married but little further is known of him: Provincial
Archives of N.B., RS 108, "Land Petitions," Henry Hayward and 10 others
petition for land in the Parish of Sussex, Kings Co., N.B., January 31,
1820. In that petition, Henry states that he is 25 years old, born in
Nova Scotia and "has always resided in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick."
He asked for 300 acres. If he ever married, it was after the date of
this Petition; and c) Matthew md. Margaret (___) and had a child;
nothing else known: he was mentioned in his father's will and received
an eighth, to be granted after he came of age; Provincial Archives of N.
B., RS 108, "Land Petitions," Matthew Hayward and 10 others petition for
land in the Parish of Sussex, Kings Co., N.B., 31 January 1820. In that
petition, Matthew states that he is 23 years old with a wife and one
child, "has ever resided in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick," and asked for
500 acres."

"As to Henry [HAYWARD] military records: my husband and I spent two days at the Public Record Office, Kew, pouring through original regimental reports to get the information regarding Henry. Nothing is in any "summarized" form except what's in my notes gathered from that research.

Henry Hayward was a foot solder in the British Army 54th Regiment of Foot, later known as the West Norfolk Regiment. He first appears on the regimental muster roll of Capt. George T. Ridsdale's Company, under Major General Mariscoe Frederick for the period 1 April 1770 - 30 June 1770. That report is dated 31 July 1770 at Granard (today, County Longford, Republic of Ireland). The original quarterly muster roll reports for the 54th are missing for the period Dec. 1767 through 31 March 1770; a check back through all reports from 26 Dec. 1766 to Dec. 1767 failed to locate him. As a result, we can only say that Pvt. Henry Hayward joined the 54th Regiment of Foot sometime between Dec. 1767 and 1 April 1770.
The movements of Henry Hayward's company of 54th Foot can be traced from the above period through his discharge 21 August 1783, shown in the report of 9 Oct. 1783 dated at Staten Island, NY, when he was a member of Capt. Carr Thomas Brackenbury's Company. Following is a listing of all regimental muster roll reports of the 54th on which Henry's name appears, read at the Public Record Office, Kew, July, 1997 [WO 12/6398 (1760-1777) & WO 12/6399 (1778-1798)]. The location of the regiment in Ireland during 1774 is consistent with the baptismal certificate I obtained for son George, baptized at St. Paul's, Dublin on 20 march 1774:

After his discharge in August, 1783 at Staten Island, NY, Henry likely stayed in New York for a short time, arranging transport to Canada along with other dischargees and Loyalists. He may have departed by November 25 of that year when the British made their main evacuation from New York. Son George, in a land grant petition of 1820, refers to his having been living in Nova Scotia and "in this Province" (of Canada?) since 1783.
Henry was granted 500 acres of land at Windsor Road, Windsor Township, Hants Co., NS, but no record of the petition for a land grant has been located by me or other Hayward researchers. "Loyalists & Land Settlement in Nova Scotia," Marion Gilroy, 1937 and "Whereabouts of Some American Refugees, 1784-1800, The Nova Scotian Land Grants," Clifford Neal Smith, 1994 confirms Henry's grant of 500 acres in 1785 at Windsor Road, Hants Co., NS. He is also listed in the 1791 Poll Tax in Windsor Township, occupation: weaver. He lived there from at least 31 March 1784 to 1798-1800 when he moved to Hopewell Parish, Westmoreland, Co., NB. The cloth industry was prominent in Norfolk Co., England; perhaps Henry's occupation as weaver reflects his Norfolk heritage (?)
The first mention of Henry in New Brunswick (NB) records is the registration of a land deed in Hopewell/Shepody, Westmorland Co., NB in 1800. The area to which he moved had been settled by the Acadians and been cleared of forest, marshes diked, etc. It was also an area which had more land available for grants for all Henry's sons, as well as being close to markets, nearer the sea.
It is believed that Henry married at least three times and fathered children with each of his wives. His first wife was called "Catherine" on the baptismal certificate of her son George at Dublin, Ireland 20 March 1774. A deed signed by Henry and "Izzy" in Nova Scotia seems to indicate that either Catherine was known as Izzy/Isabella or, perhaps, that he'd married a second time (and twice later). In 1806, about 2 years before his death, he deeded one half of his farm to his eldest son, George G. He died 25 March 1808 in Hopewell Parish, Westmorland Co., NB. His will provides for his wife Nancy and all his children. He is buried on a knoll on what was his own land at Shepody Mount/Mountville in Hopewell. I have a photo of his tombstone; it is the only one on the site. It reads: "In Memory of Henry Hayward who Departed this Life
March 25, 1808 in the 63 Year of his Age."

poring over them. I thought before I got much further I'd start jotting down notes, comments, and questions below as I read.....

1) As to the name of Henry's first(?) wife - it is clearly Catherine on the 1774 baptism record and clearly Isabell/Izzy on some NS records (you note one in land records in 1784). I cannot rule out the possibility that these were different women entirely, esp. when you note the gaps in ages between 2nd child William, b. @1777 and James b. 1785. Eunice Franks once told me that there was a family tradition that a wife of Henry had died in Brooklyn and decided that it was likely Brooklyn, Hants Co., NS. However, Henry's regiment was stationed in NY during the Revolution and it's not impossible that a wife died in Brooklyn, NY. This is almost impossible to document in any way - I've done some checking into wives of enlisted men traveling with the army (they did), but virtually no record of them was kept. Note, too, that son George named his second daughter Catherine (and his last Isabella! - can't win!).
Similarly, that any of his wives were surnamed "Griffiths" is wholly speculation on the part of other researchers, theorized only because of George's "middle name" which, as we've seen, he was not christened with . There is a bit of a house of cards here that I think requires some distance.

2) Interesting that Henry Hayward mentioned nothing of/left nothing to children of any of his wives by any previous husbands of theirs....while not unusual, especially since he had a large family of his own children, it it not uncommon to at least see the children of wives mentioned....

3) I never saw a son of Henry named "Bruce Hunter" born 1785, likely a twin to James, died at birth, per K.E. Kanner, Early Families Revisited, Moncton, New Brunswick (1993). I wonder where this record came from? With a middle name and called Bruce, not a name repeated in this family, I wonder.....

Another item worth thinking about is that Jane & Henry named a son Matthew - this is not a Hayward name per se; he is the only one I have out of hundreds & hundreds of Haywards...is Matthew a McCully name?

Mrs. Eunice M. Franks [210-193 Lockwood Road, Regina, Saskatchewan S4S 6G9] wrote the following in a letter to us about Copps, McCullys and Haywards:
"I do not know any more about Henry's [HAYWARD] sec. wife Jane (McCall?); the records were old, and the Microfilm was very poor - even Archivist at Halifax could not make it out clearly - so spell. is only a guess.
"Henry Hayward married 3rd Nancy (Ann) Copp (a cousin of her, Abigail, married Henry's oldest son, G. G. Hayward).Abigail was d/o David Copp and Mary (May) Pike of Horton, N. S., then Westmorland Co., N. B. Ann (Nancy) Copp was d/o Jonathan Copp and Elizabeth Anderson. I think Nancy re-married a KEILLOR of Westmorland Co. Her father Jonathan Copp died before 19 June 1822, when his will was probated. He left sons Daniel, Samuel, Chandler, James, and grandson Jonathan Copp (son of deceased son John), and two daughters, Ann KEILOR (probably "Nancy", married 2nd) and one other dau. Mary, married a WILBUR.
"Nancy Copp married Henry Hayward (his 3rd marriage) at Hopewell; she was very young - . ca 1803, he about 58 years old (died 25 March 1808). Dau. Sarah Hayward b. 7 May 1804; son Jonathan Copp Hayward b. ca 1806. Ann (Nancy) probably remarried ca. 1809/10 ___ KEILLOR."

2. To wife Abigail £40 yearly; sons Henry and William to each pay £20/year as long as she lives, as long as she doesn't remarry and ask for dowry. Also to Abigail, the use of her and George's house, yard, furniture, etc., as long as she lives.
3. To son David the two lots currently in his possession: lot 14 (260 acres) and lot B (140 acres), plus all buildings and improvements.
4. To grandson Handford Hayward, son of late Humphrey Hayward, the lot Humphrey had that George had purchased from James McAffie; Handford to pay £15 for it, to go to William Morton (Norton?), son of Samuel Morton.
5. To son Henry lot #58 bounded on the west by land George bought from Philip Force, on the north by Trout Creek, and on the east by Mrs. Bowser's land - 200 acres.
Also to Henry, 200 acres of lot 57 which George purchased from Philip Force, except for that part reserved for Abigail's use until she dies; then it goes to Henry.
6. To son William the hill land purchased from John Hennigar and Samuel - William must pay off the £158 mortgage. Also William gets 90 acres of lot 57 currently in his possession.
7. Sons Henry and William to divide equally the land on Salmon River purchased from Jacob Snider.
8. To daughters Mary (wife of Thomas McLellan), Jane (wife of William Pugsley), and Isabella (wife of Dr. David McLellan), £100 each, payable £10 per year.

Henry and William Hayward were made executors; witnesses to the will were Robert McCully, Hugh Teakles, and Clark Teakles. A property inventory done 5 Dec 1856 showed the estate valued at £4311+, £4150 of it in real estate.

HAYWARD family - (1)Henry HAYWARD [incorrectly called William in this article] was an officer in the British Army, came to Nova Scotia after "the peace of 1783, received a grant of land [author not sure if it was at Halifax or Windsor - it was Windsor]. He moved to Hopewell, N. B. early in the 1800s.
(2) Eldest son George Griffith HAYWARD m. Abigail COPP, dau. of "Capt. COPP" of Lower Hopewell, in Nova Scotia, had two or three children before moving to Hopewell, N. B. They stayed at Hopewell until March 1811, then sold his land to "Mr. CLARK" grandfather of Mrs. Robert [Lavinia] McCULLY, and moved to Sussex. In Sussex bought 400 acres [lots 57 and 58] from Philip and William Force [who were Loyalists from PA - they and others from Sussex got the "Nigary (Niagara?) fever" and returned to "the States"]. George and Abigail were Wesleyan church members, but George was instrumental in bringing the first Methodist minister Rev. Michael PICKLES, and contributed to the building of the Methodist church in Sussex in 1830. George died 24 Nov 1856; Abigail d. 13 Mar 1860.

-George Griffith HAYWARD m. Abigail COPP, dau. of "Capt. COPP" of Lower Hopewell, in Nova Scotia, had two or three children before moving to Hopewell, N. B. They stayed at Hopewell until March 1811, then sold his land to "Mr. CLARK" grandfather of Mrs. Robert [Lavinia] McCULLY, and moved to Sussex. In Sussex bought 400 acres [lots 57 and 58] from Philip and William Force [who were Loyalists from PA - they and others from Sussex got the "Nigary (Niagara?) fever" and returned to "the States"]. George and Abigail were Wesleyan church members, but George was instrumental in bringing the first Methodist minister Rev. Michael PICKLES, and contributed to the building of the Methodist church in Sussex in 1830. George died 24 Nov 1856; Abigail d. 13 Mar 1860. Children:

Also to Henry, 200 acres of lot 57 which George purchased from Philip Force, except for that part reserved for Abigail's use until she dies; then it goes to Henry.
-Sons Henry and William to divide equally the land on Salmon River purchased from Jacob Snider.
-Son Henry gets any remainder of the estate.
Henry and William Hayward were made executors; witnesses to the will were Robert McCully, Hugh Teakles, and Clark Teakles. A property inventory done 5 Dec 1856 showed the estate valued at £4311+, £4150 of it in real estate.

"Samuel Freeze (b. ca 1822, d. 23 Aug 1870) married Sarah E. Morton (b. ca 1820) on 18 Jul 1846 in Kings County, NB. He was a farmer and a hotel keeper in Norton Parish of Kings County, NB. He died of consumption. Samuel was a son of John Freeze (1787-11 Nov 1865) and Ann (Nancy) Snider (ca 1787-31 May 1856). They farmed in Penobsquis. John and his parents are buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Penobsquis, NB.
Samuel's grandparents were William Freeze (b. 1745 in Hovingham, Yorkshire, d. 1812 in Penobsquis) and Mary Bulmer (d. ca 1790). William and Mary were married in Hovingham in 1770. I have a copy of their marriage record. They came to Nova Scotia in 1772.

It also said his mother's name was Elizabeth. Do you know if Sarah's middle name was Elizabeth? My record shows Sarah E.
"George had two surviving children, Mrs. A. J. Sollows, Halifax, NS and Miss Ethel Freeze, Montreal, Quebec. His wife was born Annie Jackson. Also listed as a survivor was brother Frank Freeze, living in Boston, MA. Frank was listed in the 1871 census, but Abigail was missing. Henry Freeze married Lydia A Morton on 15 Dec 1880. I have nothing more on this family.
I have published a partial genealogy of the Freezes. My wife was born Evelyn Freeze and she is a greatgreat granddaughter of William Freeze who came to Nova Scotia in 1772. A great great grandmother of mine was also a Freeze, hence my interest in the family.

Margaret SHELDON ca 1818 New Brunswick or Nova Scotia; moved to Belmont Co., Ohio, early 1820s, then by 1834 to Edenton, Wayne Township, Clermont Co., Ohio. From census records, it appears that they had at least seven children. Only two of them have been positively identified so far.A tentative list of children follows, with their approximate birth years. The unidentified ones may include some or all of the following [NOTE: the name is often spelled HAYWOOD in the Ohio records]: Mary HAYWARD m. 3 Aug 1848 Clermont Co., OH, Edward G. "Is the name HAYWARD familiar in this area? I'm looking for two brothers, Henry HAYWARD [b. 1794 Nova Scotia] and Matthew HAYWARD [b. 1796 Nova Scotia; had wife Margaret ___] who may have arrived in the Steubenville area around 1820-1822, possibly lived in Guernsey or Belmont counties 1820s-1840s. They would have come to the area from Kings County, New Brunswick."

"My Grandfather Ernest Sheldon Hayward (born in Topeka Kansas on 10 March 1877; died Spokane Washington in 1955) was the son of David Joshia Hayward and Martha Rath. I am told David Joshia Hayward died on 8 Nov 1918 at the Old Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio (buried there), and Martha Rath died on 27 Feb 1882 and is Buried at Toledo Qld Quaker Cemetery in Chase County, Kansas.
"I have some very rough hand written notes given to me from one of my aunts which said David Joshia's mother was Margaret Sheldon (who was born in Nova Scotia and came to Ohio via Maryland. The notes are missing hisfather's name."

"I have a copy of a document that makes reference to a Family Bible that pages were torn out of and sent on to someone in - there is a note dated 20 May 1919, as follows [Note: I have left the errors in as written]:

I Arthur J Klotz, A Notary Public, within and for the County and State afore said, do hereby certify that I have this day examined Three leaves of a Family Bible now in the possession of Mrs, Walter Crook and Daughter of
David J Hayward and I find on one of these leaves the following,.
Willie E Hayward died on 11th Day of January 1871. Mary I Hayward died on the 11th Day of August 1873. Martha A Hayward died on the 27th Day of February 1882. Margarett Hayward died on the 2nd day od November 1814, age76 years, borned in Novscotia.
Mrs Cooke Crooke states to me that she wrote her brother for the Family record, and instead of sending the bible he tore the sheets contacting the records and sent them to her. Given under my hand and offical seal this

"In the 1870 Defiance Co., Ohio, census. I found David and Martha HAYWOOD living with my 3rd great-grandparents John and Mary [McCAULEY] RATH and their son George. I find no record of them in the 1880 Ohio census. John and Mary died in 1876 and 1873, and George apparantly moved away. No Haywood/Haywards are in McCauley Cemetery where most of the Raths are buried, so I suspect they moved away too."

"Regarding David Hayward and Martha Rath, my 2nd great-grandfather Michael Rath was a brother of Martha. Their parents were John Rath (1803 - 1876) and Mary M. McCauley (1805 - 1873). David and Martha were living with her parents in Defiance Co., Ohio in the 1870 census. The family included 6 boys: William, John P., Joseph, Michael P., George W., and Phillip McCauley along with at least 2 girls: Mary and Martha A. I believe that there was at least one additional daughter: Elizabeth Rath. She married a Wendlin Bowman in Defiance Co. just before the 1850 census. I lost track of her after the 1860 census. All the boys except William fought in the Civil War with John and Joseph dying. The boys and their families all remained in Defiance Co. Mary is gone after the 1860 census. Michael's obit lists her as a probable survivor - Mary Truck of Cincinnati, Ohio.
"John Rath was reportedly born in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania and is of Bavarian descent. Michael's obit states that William Rath came to New York in 179_ and with his son Anthony settling in Philadelphia. I assume that
William is either father or grandfather of John, but I suppose he could be even farther back. Mary M. McCauley Rath is daughter of Phillip and Mary McCauley. She had a brother Patrick who settled in Defiance Co. and a
sister Susan on whom I have no information. Her father Phillip McCauley was reportedly born in Ireland and fought in the War of 1812, but I have found little trace of him. Mary McCauley was reportedly born in Pennsylvania of
German ancestry. She came to Defiance Co. from Pennsylvania with her granddaughter Juliann (d.of Patrick) in the winter of 1855. Both died there that winter and were the first burials in McCauley Cemetery.
"Apparently John and Mary were married in the Carlisle, Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania area. Their children were born in Cumberland, Franklin, and Adams counties of Pennsylvania. They came to Defiance Co. in 1845 and John
was a blacksmith there in Tiffin Twp."

Mrs. Eunice M. Franks [210-193 Lockwood Road, Regina, Saskatchewan S4S 6G9] wrote the following in a letter to us about Copps, McCullys and Haywards:
"I do not know any more about Henry's [HAYWARD] sec. wife Jane (McCall?); the records were old, and the Microfilm was very poor - even Archivist at Halifax could not make it out clearly - so spell. is only a guess.
"Henry Hayward married 3rd Nancy (Ann) Copp (a cousin of her, Abigail, married Henry's oldest son, G. G. Hayward).Abigail was d/o David Copp and Mary (May) Pike of Horton, N. S., then Westmorland Co., N. B. Ann (Nancy) Copp was d/o Jonathan Copp and Elizabeth Anderson. I think Nancy re-married a KEILLOR of Westmorland Co. Her father Jonathan Copp died before 19 June 1822, when his will was probated. He left sons Daniel, Samuel, Chandler, James, and grandson Jonathan Copp (son of deceased son John), and two daughters, Ann KEILOR (probably "Nancy", married 2nd) and one other dau. Mary, married a WILBUR.
"Nancy Copp married Henry Hayward (his 3rd marriage) at Hopewell; she was very young - ca 1803, he about 58 years old (died 25 March 1808). Dau. Sarah Hayward b. 7 May 1804; son Jonathan Copp Hayward b. ca 1806. Ann (Nancy) probably remarried ca. 1809/10 ___ KEILLOR."
