The Descendants of Henry HAYWARD & Jane McCULLOH

in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ohio and Beyond

Sanford "Sandy" Wilbur - Updated January 2003

I'm gathering information on the descendants of Henry HAYWARD (ca. 1744 - 25 Mar 1808) and Jane McCULLOH ( -ca 1797; NOTE: McCULLOH is probably not her "maiden" name). Henry and Jane were married 15 Dec 1790 Hants County, Nova Scotia. Henry had a family by a previous marriage; Jane likely did, also. They had three children together, after which Jane died ca. 1797 at Windsor, Hants Co., N. S. Within a few years after her death, Henry moved his family to Westmorland (now, Albert) County, New Brunswick, where he married 3rd Nancy COPP , had two more children, and died in 1808.

The eldest child of Henry and Jane, Catherine HAYWARD, married in Kings County, New Brunswick, raised her family [MORTON] and died there. Henry HAYWARD and Matthew HAYWARD may have moved from Westmorland/Albert County to Kings County for a time, also, but I haven't been able to find any definite land records, yet. There is also the possibility that one or both lived in Nova Scotia for awhile before they moved to Ohio before 1830 (probably between 1822 and 1825).

References for the Catherine (HAYWARD) MORTON line, and partial documentation of the Henry and Matthew HAYWARD lines, is included on my comprehensive Henry HAYWARD page. Newer information on Henry and Matthew is included in my EndNotes database, but has not been transferred to webpages, yet. I will eventually post it. In the meantime, if you have questions, please contact me. I'd appreciate further information on any of these people or their descendants. Send me an e-mail.

3-Henry HAYWARD b. 27 July 1794 Windsor, Hants Co., Nova Scotia; living in Albert County, New Brunswick ca 1800 to ca 1820; (May also have lived in Kings County, N. B., and/or in Nova Scotia part of this time). He m. Letitia __ before 1825 in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Ohio; [Letitia born in Ireland, perhaps ca 1797; still living 1870 Guernsey Co., Ohio]. Henry moved from New Brunswick or Nova Scotia to Belmont County, Ohio, probably in the early 1820s, then to nearby Guernsey Co., Ohio in the 1840s; he died 1870 Jefferson Township, Guernsey Co., Ohio, and is buried in the Pleasant Hill United Presbyterian Cemetery in Jefferson Township. Letitia sold their property there in 1870, after Henry's death. We have been unable to trace her after that point.

17-Son HAYWARD b. between 1820 and 1825, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Ohio. The only evidence we have for this son is the 1830 census (Belmont Co., OH), which shows a boy 5-10 years of age. We haven't been able to locate Henry Hayward's family in the 1840 census, and this "son" does not appear in the 1850 census.

18-Joseph HAYWARD b. ca 1828 Ohio (probably Colerain Township, Belmont Co.). He was in his parents home, and listed as a farmer in Jefferson Township, Guernsey Co., Ohio in the 1850 census. He married by 1858 Mary J. ____ (b. ca 1827 Ohio), and they were living near his parents in Guernsey Co., OH, at the time of the 1860 census. We haven't been able to locate them in 1880.

33-Francis HAYWARD (daughter) b. ca 1858 (probably Guernsey Co., OH).

4-Matthew HAYWARD b. 14 Oct 1796 Windsor, Hants Co., Nova Scotia; living in Albert and possibly Kings counties, New Brunswick ca 1800 to ca 1825; may also have lived in Nova Scotia for awhile after 1816. He m. Margaret SHELDON ca 1818 New Brunswick or Nova Scotia (daughter of Benjamin and Jane Sheldon?, born ca 1797 Nova Scotia); moved to Belmont Co., Ohio, early 1820s, then by 1831 to Edenton, Wayne Township, Clermont Co., Ohio. They moved to Washington Township, Defiance Co., OH, before 1860. Matthew died there prior to the 1860 census, and Margaret was living with their son Joseph HAYWARD and his family. Margaret died 2 Nov 1874, either in Defiance Co., or in Chase Co., Kansas, where Joseph Hayward moved about 1874.

19-Daughter HAYWARD b. ca 1819 New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. Matthew Hayward petitioned for land in New Brunswick in 1820, at which time he said he had one daughter. A girl of the correct age appears in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. She likely married in Clermont Co., OH, sometime after 1840.

20- [Probable] Son HAYWARD b. between 1820 and 1825, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Ohio. A boy of the correct age appears in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. He likely would have been on his own by the 1850 census.

21-Sarah HAYWARD b. ca. 1825, New Brunswick or Nova Scotia. She married Benjamin SHOE 9 Sept 1849 in Clermont Co., OH. (Benjamin SHOE, son of Abraham SHOE and Rebecca BRINKLEY, b. ca 1824 Ohio). They were living near Sarah's parents at the time of the 1850 census, and had moved with them to Defiance Co., OH, by 1860.

22- [Probable] Son HAYWARD b. between 1825 and 1830, probably Ohio. This son is tentatively placed in the family because of a male of the correct age in the 1830 and 1840 censuses. He was not with his parents in 1850, but likely would have been on his own, by then.

23-[Probable] Mary HAYWARD b. ca 1830, Ohio. Married Edward HARRIS 3 Aug 1848 Clermont Co., OH. [Edward Harris b. ca 1827, Ohio.] Living in Goshen Township, Clermont Co., OH at the 1850 census. NOTE: Mary is a tentative placement in this family. She was of the right age, in the right place, and there was room for her in Matthew's family as shown in the 1830 and 1840 censuses.

34. William A. HARRIS b. ca 1849, probably Goshen Township, Clermont Co., OH.

24-[Probable] Lydia HAYWARD b. ca 1832, Ohio. Married Job RANDALL 4 March 1849 Clermont Co., OH. [Job Randall b. ca 1826, Ohio.] Living in Goshen Township, Clermont Co., OH at 1850 census. NOTE: Like Mary Hayward above, this is a tentative placement in this family. Lydia and Mary were married by the same justice of the peace.

35. Susan E. RANDALL b. ca 1850, probably Goshen Township, Clermont Co., OH.

25-Joseph HAYWARD b. ca 1833, Ohio (probably Edenton, Clermont Co.). Married Lydia Ann STOUDER 27 March 1859 Clermont Co., OH. [Lydia Stouder b. ca 1839, Ohio.] By 1860, they were living in Washington Township, Defiance Co., OH, where Joseph farmed. They moved from there after 1870 and before 1874 to Toledo Township, Chase Co., Kansas, where they were living in 1880.

36.Florence HAYWARD b. ca 1860, Ohio (probably Defiance Co.). Moved with her parents to Chase Co., Kansas. Not in household in 1880 - married by then?

37.Daniel HAYWARD b. ca 1861 Washington Township, Defiance Co., OH. Shown with parents in 1870 Ohio census, but not found in 1880 Kansas census.

38.Elmer E. HAYWARD b. ca 1862 Washington Township, Defiance Co., OH. With parents in Toledo Township, Chase Co., Kansas, in 1880. [NOTE: Elmer does not appear in the 1870 census, when he would have been about 8 years old.]

39.Emma J. HAYWARD b. ca 1867 Washington Township, Defiance Co., OH. With parents in Toledo Township, Chase Co., Kansas, in 1880.

40.Katy Bell HAYWARD b. ca 1868 Washington Township, Defiance Co., OH. With parents in Toledo Township, Chase Co., Kansas, in 1880.

41.Joseph A. HAYWARD b. ca 1874 Chase Co., Kansas. At home with parents in Toledo Township, Chase Co., KS, in 1880.

26-David Joshia HAYWARD b. 8 May 1834 Edenton, Clermont Co., OH; m. 22 Feb 1870 Defiance Co., OH, Martha L. RATH, daughter of John RATH [1803-1876] and Mary M. McCAULEY [1805-1873]. (Martha Rath b. ca 1846, Pennsylvania.) David apparently worked for Martha's father as a blacksmith in Defiance Co., prior to their marriage. David served in the Union Army during the Civil War (5th Ohio Cavalry, and 22 Ohio Infantry.) They lived in Noble, Township, Defiance County until approximately 1873, when they moved to Toledo Township, Chase County, KS. Martha died there 27 Feb 1882. David married 2nd Rachel BANTIE. He died 8 November 1918 at the Old Soldiers' Home in Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH. All children are by his first wife Martha.

42 - Willie Elsworth HAYWARD b. 8 Jan 1871 Noble Township, Defiance Co., OH; died there 11 Jan 1871

43- Mary Ivy HAYWARD b. 31 Dec 1871, either Defiance Co., OH, or Kansas; d. 11 Aug 1873 Ohio or Kansas

44- John Livington HAYWARD b. 12 Oct 1873, Kansas; d. 21 Jan 1953; m. Inez E. BRANDON (b. 19 Mar 1887); three children [family names HAYWARD, JENNINGS, JONES, SMITH]

45- James Albian HAYWARD b. 4 Feb 1876, Kansas; d. 10 May 1941

46 - Ernest Sheldon HAYWARD b. 10 Mar 1877 Topeka, Shawnee Co., KS; d. 1955 Spokane, Spokane Co., WA; m. 18 Jan 1912, North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, Florence Amy PHIPPS [Florence b. 12 Sep 1881, Aston, Warwick Co., England; d. 10 Mar 1951, Pullman, Whitman Co., Washington; the dau. of William Henry PHIPPS and Mary Harriet DICKENSON]. They had seven children [family names HAYWARD, MURPHY, LaMARR, GILBERT, HUNT, BAUMANN, SEILER, BUNCH, LEINWEBER, BUNCH.
Marr:

47 - Rosa May HAYWARD b. 5 Feb 1880, Kansas; d. 1 Jul 1968; m. Walter CROOKE.

27-Nancy E. HAYWARD b. ca 1838 Clermont Co., OH; m. 1 Jan 1857 John JORDAN, Clermont Co., OH.

28-[probable] SON HAYWARD. The 1840 census has a male child in the Matthew Hayward home born between 1836 and 1840. No son of this age is in the 1850 census, or accounted for later. If he existed, he likely died young.
